Statement on School Shooting in Uvalde

May 27, 2022

“Chuck and I are heartbroken over the senseless murders of innocent children and teachers in Uvalde. Violence against children is among the most heinous crimes imaginable. We must take meaningful steps to protect our children and that begins with enhancing physical security at schools. There is already roughly $100 billion sitting in the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund that can be used for this purpose. In addition, schools should have secured, limited entry points, and increased funding for school resource officers. School officials with prior military or law enforcement experience should be allowed to carry firearms. Finally, mental health must be taken seriously. We should improve access to resources and treatment for those suffering from mental illness.” – Senator Blackburn
