Blackburn, Lee Lead Call For Senate Trial On Mayorkas Impeachment

February 21, 2024

NASHVILLE, TENN. – U.S. Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) and Mike Lee (R-Utah) led their colleagues in calling for Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to demand a Senate trial for Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, noting the Senate’s constitutional responsibility to conduct a thorough trial following the House's impeachment articles.

Our Republican colleagues in the House have recently passed two articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law, as well as the breach of public trust, wrote the senators. “Those articles will soon be transmitted to the Senate. It is imperative that the Senate Republican conference prepare to fully engage our Constitutional duty and hold a trial.

  • Earlier this month, Senator Blackburn announced her support for convicting Secretary Mayorkas when the trial reaches the Senate.

  • Senators Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.), Rick Scott (R-Fla.), Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), Mike Braun (R-Ind.), Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), Ted Budd (R-N.C.), and Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) also signed the letter.
