STATE OF THE UNION

President Trump conveyed an inspiring message and a hopeful vision for our country in Tuesday night’s State of the Union message. He expressed confidence in our nation’s future and extended a hand to Democrats to work together, in unity, to produce results for all Americans.  As the president communicated in his speech, the state of our union is strong. Our nation is well-positioned to address our challenges in a way that meets the needs of the 21st century. I look forward to continuing to work with President Trump and with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to build on our success for the American people.

HONORED TO WELCOME THE CORCORAN FAMILY AS GUESTS

Bringing Knoxville Fire Captain D.J. Corcoran to the State of the Union as my guest was a true honor. He and his wife, Wendy, who attended with Congressman Tim Burchett, lost their 22-year-old son, Pierce, in late December when he was killed by an illegal immigrant. The Corcorans are faith-filled Tennesseans who love their country, their family, and God. They have taken the tragic loss their family experienced and spread a message of hope that no American should have to experience the anguish of becoming an Angel Family. I am incredibly thankful they accepted our invitation to attend as our guests.

I hope you will take a minute to watch the Corcorans share their story and their thoughts on the State of the Union address on Fox News Channel and WATE Channel 6 Knoxville

TENNESSEE TUESDAY

Another terrific Tennessee Tuesday with Senator Alexander in the books! It was great to meet with so many constituents on a beautiful day in our nation’s capital. If you will be in Washington, D.C. on a Tuesday that the Senate is in session, we would love for you to attend our special constituent breakfast, which takes place from 9:00 AM to 10:15 AM. Tennesseans attending will have the opportunity to meet and have their photographs taken with Tennessee’s senators. You can sign up for Tennessee Tuesday here.

DISCUSSED LOCAL INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENT IN TENNESSEE

Tennesseans from the National League of Cities stopped by to discuss federal investment in local infrastructure projects, building to withstand potential natural disasters, and expanding broadband services. It was great talking with Jill Holland, Mayor of McKenzie, and Margaret Mahery, Executive Director of Tennessee Municipal League.

SPOKE ON THE IMPORTANCE OF TENNESSEE HBCUs

It was great to speak to the HBCU Fly-In attendees this week and have a representative from Lane College in the group! Tennessee’s HBCUs generate an estimated $873 million in economic impact as well as 7,289 jobs. I thanked our HBCUs for the work they do for our young people. You can learn more about the economic impact of Tennessee’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities here.
